Philips was founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father as a family business. As a banker in Zaltbommel, Frederik Philips financed the purchase and adaptation of an empty, modest factory building in Eindhoven in 1892. There, Philips started producing light bulbs with carbon filaments and other electrotechnical products.
